It has become abundantly clear from the
cloying election coverage that the concept of liberal-media bias is in
need of revision. Media, right and left, are plain biased. Objective
coverage is obsolete.
Having beatified Barrack, the line-up on the left now spends its time
taking down and torpedoing Clinton and McCain. Consider: Michelle Obama
spits like a cobra, and Cindy McCain is blamed for recoiling from the
verbal venom.
In its hatred of Hillary, the conservative cast has taken to blowing up
every one of her attacks on Obama into a hate crime. Plagiarism or
beefless blather—you name them, they are depicted by conservatives as
byproducts of Clinton’s machinations.
Mention Barrack, and Newt Gingrich, Dick Morris, even Bay Buchanan fall
slobbering to the floor; a hint of Hillary, and they rise on their hind
legs. How, pray tell, are they less biased than the left’s catty,
never-clever Katie Couric?
Sly Katie recently interviewed Clinton while intoxicated—drunk with love
for Obama. Couric’s below-the-belt barbs and blithe probes about
Obama—but not the issues—made Hillary appear elevated by comparison. The
Senator was courteous where Katie was cruel.
“Someone told me your nickname in school was Miss Frigidaire. Is that
true?” Couric asked. "Only with some boys," Clinton said, laughing
The answer was quick, and, I must confess, classy. The question was base
and bitchy. (It’s of a piece with another iconic “journalist’s”
cruelty—that of Barbara Walters. She prefaced an interview with Celine
Dion by pronouncing: “you are not beautiful.” Tears welled in Dion’s
beautiful eyes.)
This column
has been scrupulously impartial in its dislike for the front runners.
I’ve described each candidate’s political philosophy as un-American and
unconstitutional, and plunked them down together on “The
Hillary, Hussein, McCain Axis of Evil.”
My vantage
point, I venture, qualifies me to fill in for the moribund mainstream
media—dead from self-inflicted wounds. So let me begin with the
allegations Barack helped himself to words not his for one of his
Hear-Me-Roar speeches. Allegations that were, naturally, skirted by
society’s unfaithful watchdogs.
Obama
touts—and is running on—his moral compass. Failing to acknowledge the
source of one’s ideas, formulations, or verbatim quotes is, however,
unethical. Thus even if indeed Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick had
encouraged Obama to borrow his phrases, the good professor ought to have
prefaced the speech with a, “To paraphrase my friend Deval Patrick.”
Writer Steve
Sailer has uncovered a possible pattern: The title of Obama's second
book, the current bestseller “The Audacity of Hope,” was lifted from one
of his pastor’s sermons. I wonder whether Obama acknowledged Rev.
Jeremiah T. Wright’s titular contribution.
On to
Barack’s bride’s bitter slip of the tongue. Michelle
Obama told a Wisconsin audience that for the first time in her adult
lifetime, she was really proud of her country, “because it feels like
hope is finally making a comeback.” Those were her unadulterated words.
The media has done much to finesse what she meant. The
shabbiest strategy, pioneered by The Hill’s A.B. Stoddard, has been to
accuse any-and-all of not liking strong women. The pertinent facts were
ignored:
Exhibit 1:
Recounting her thoughts on first encountering
Barack, Michelle Obama joked with an Iowa crowd: “He was biracial. I was
like, okay, what's that about?” What would have befallen Cindy McCain or
Bill Clinton had they turned their noses up at racial intermarriage, as
did Mama Obama?
If anything, her charmed life has made Michelle
Obama more racially militant. “My
experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my 'blackness'
than ever before." So she wrote in a blatantly banal university
thesis.
Exhibit 2: In reply to a question as to whether she
feared for her husband’s safety, M. Obama told Steve Kroft of “60
Minutes” that, "As a black man, you know, Barack can get shot going to
the gas station." There she goes again. Like her husband, the woman
turns a phrase carefully. There’s no mistaking what she meant: In the
America M. Obama has only recently become proud of, blacks are imperiled
daily.
Michelle Obama’s gaseous swipe reminds me of the last
two black men picked off while pumping gas. Wait a sec, I got my facts
topsy-turvy. Two of the D.C Snipers’ 13 victims were murdered in gas
stations. Neither was black. The Snipers, on the other hand, were both
black. The pattern of racial victimization in the country Mrs. Obama
will likely officiate as first lady is
unidirectional.
“In almost all interracial attacks, whites are the
victims, not the victimizers.” So found a study titled “The Color of
Crime,” cited by the intrepid Patrick J. Buchanan. “Blacks commit more
violent crime against whites than against other blacks,” and “blacks are
an estimated 39 times more likely to commit violent crime against a
white person than vice versa. Black-on-white rape is 115 times more
common than the reverse.”
Michelle Obama’s sentiments seep out from that festering
reservoir of racial animosity—the same cesspool wherefrom the Reverends
Sharpton and Jackson launch their perennial strikes against
honky.
If Americans
were as good at driving a bargain as they are at coming out in droves
for Obama, they’d insist that he insist that his spouse quit smearing
them in this manner.
